The Lifeline Program is a federal program that works to lower the cost of phone and internet services for low-income American households. The Lifeline Program can certainly benefit an older person living on a fixed income. With the reduced costs that Lifeline provides its customers, seniors can stay connected on a budget.

How Much Can I Save as A Lifeline Consumer?

As we get older, it is important to pay close attention to finances and take advantage of any savings that can make life easier. The nationwide average cost of internet and phone service can cost customers hundreds of dollars per month. Eligible Lifeline Program consumers can save $9.25 per month. Consumers who live on Indigenous Tribal Lands can take advantage of a discount of up to $34.25 per month.

Do I Qualify for Lifeline Service?

The Lifeline Program is meant to help low-income Americans. Eligibility is typically based on income. Lifeline may consider your enrollment in government assistance programs to determine your eligibility.

Lifeline benefit recipients live under the federal poverty line. When you apply, be prepared to show proof of income like your tax return for the previous year or recent paystubs.

You may be eligible for Lifeline if you receive certain government assistance benefits. Lifeline recipients usually also receive the following government subsidies:

People living on Tribal Lands may also qualify for Lifeline service if they participate in one of the following programs:

  • Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations
  • Tribal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (Tribal TANF)
  • Head Start
  • Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance
  • Any of the above-mentioned government assistance programs

There are some instances when applicants can qualify for these services through their dependent children. If your child or dependent is enrolled in any of the above programs, your household may qualify for the Lifeline Program.

How Do I Apply and Start Receiving Lifeline Program Benefits?

The Lifeline Program allows applicants to apply online, via mail, or over the phone. A Lifeline Program service provider will evaluate your application and approve you if you qualify.

After qualifying for service, you must choose a phone and internet service provider in your area. The internet or phone service provider that you choose must also offer Lifeline benefits. You must sign up for this service. Ask the phone or internet company that you choose to apply your Lifeline benefit to your bill if you have an existing account.
