The Most Important New Year’s Resolution
It’s that time again, a new year and new resolutions. It is important to plan for the future, to make sure that your affairs are in order. Here are some issues to think about when discussing your estate plan:
- Do you have an estate plan in place in the event that something happens to you and you become incapacitated?
- What about when you pass away?
- Do you have someone appointed that you trust to handle your affairs: financial, healthcare, etc..?
- If you have minor children, do you have someone appointed to be their guardian?
- Will your heirs have to deal with probate?
- Do you want to avoid probate?
- Does your current estate plan deal with life events, such as divorce, accidents, deaths, and births?
- Is your current estate plan up to date with constantly changing laws?
Out of date documents can inadvertently hurt your loved ones more than they can help them. One should review their estate planning documents at least every five years. Even sooner if there has been changes within the family, like a death, divorce, marriage, or decline in health. Procrastination is one the most common reasons why people put off their estate plan.
