Important Veteran Benefit Pays for Assisted Living

I am frequently asked whether there are any public benefits available to pay for assisted living care.  Unfortunately, benefits available to pay for this type of care are limited. Other than some very limited trial or Medicaid waiver programs, the only governmental benefits available to pay for home care and some assisted living care is the Veterans Administration’s Aid and Attendance pension benefit. This benefit is available only to veterans, and their spouses, who served at least one day during wartime, and there 90 consecutive days in the military. There is no requirement that the Veteran have served in an active war theater.  State side service qualifies.  For those Veterans with a qualifying service record, a benefit of up to almost $2,000 per month is available to assist with expenses associated with their, or their spouse’s care. Widows of Veterans also qualify for this benefit.  These expenses frequently take the form of the cost of care at an assisted living facility, or the cost of in-home care to assist the Veteran with their activities of daily living. There are some income and asset limits to this benefit, but anyone who meets the above service requirements should look into whether they can qualify for his benefit. They have earned it.  For more information on this important benefit, please order our Long Term Care Benefits guide by clicking here, or contacting our office for an appointment.
